How to… Clean out Yankee Candle Jars

Hello everyone! So this is a bit of a random post but I do see a lot of people on YouTube always saying, how do I clean out my candle jars? Sometimes jar candles don’t burn very well and there’s loads of residual wax and it feels like a waste throwing them out. One thing you can do to reduce this is to ensure that the whole top layer of wax melts each time you light it, it doesn’t always work as you can see below but it does help. 

All you need for this is a kettle of boiling water 🙂 

 

This candle really didn’t burn well and there was loads left inside, it smelt lovely though! So all you need to do is boil a kettle of water and pour it in, filling it just below the neck of the jar. 

 

The wax will start to melt pretty quickly and will float up to the top of the jar, just leave it for a while, let it do its thing. After about 20 mins it will look like this: 

 

I’m happy with this one, all the wax came loose in one go and it’s an easy clean. You’ll need to leave it now for at least an hour for the wax to harden again. DO NOT pour the melted wax down the drain or anything, once it’s cold it will go hard and ruin your plumbing. 

Once it’s cooled, push down on the wax, it will either snap or bend and then you can remove it from the jar, remember to be careful when doing this, check the temperature as the water below may still be hot.

 

Once you have the wax out, you can use it as a wax tart in an oil burner 🙂

I like to use some of my cleaned jars as storage, I have one in my bathroom filled with floss harps. Once the wax has been removed, I fill the jar with hot water and bleach and give it a soak and then scrub it all out. If all the wax doesn’t come out in one go, don’t worry! Remove the wax that has floated to the top and repeat the process again until it’s all gone.
